"Imua Lanankila, A'ole Ihope" (translation: Always move forward, never back.")
Traditional Hawaiian Proverb
My love for volleyball began in the fall of my 6th grade year. Since that time, I have touched a volleyball everyday. Whether I am at home in my room or on the court with my coach perfecting a skill. I grow more and more passionate for this beautiful sport each day. This sport has taught me self-discipline on the court and off.
As a freshman, I found myself competing at the varsity level. I was asked to play on the right side opposite our veteran senior setter. It was my first time playing varsity, my first time playing on the right side, and I enjoyed the challenge. My sophomore year, I was asked to change positions again. Now I was asked to fill the vacant setter position and I feel as though I am making a difference. I touch every ball served and I can have an impact on every point in every set. I believe that is the greatest challenge.
I am constantly setting high expectations for myself. I will not rest peacefully until I become the best all-around volleyball player I can possibly be. I am self-motivated and have the
unconditional support from my family, my team and most importantly my coach. With this knowledge, I am able to exceed the expectations of those watching and strive to always do more. An important philosophy my coach has taught me, that will continue to steer my volleyball career, is to always strive to give my team everything that I have on the court. Within this, the score of the game cannot affect me.
Learning is my most important tool. I strive to learn something new every time I am on the court, whether it is positioning my feet differently on my jump serve or refining my setting technique to improve my consistency. I am must learn to improve.
