The most important aspect of a recruit's portfolio is the presence of video media that clearly advertises their athletic talents. Statistics are important and so are recommendations from a high school coach however the single most sought after type of media is competition video. If you don't have it, then a collegiate coach assumes you are not serious about your sport, your recruitment and most importantly, you are not serious about gaining their attention. You must become the director of your own show.
To clearly show them the athlete you are, you must create an athletic portfolio that is rich is video content. That content should illustrate your personality, your efforts outside of competition and most importantly feature you in competition. You must "direct" your own show. You must create videos that are well rounded and show many different facets of your game. Having a professionally edited reel is impressive but not necessary. Music and transitions make for a nice viewing experience but the bottom line is a recruiter wants to see what you have to offer. College coaches want to see athletes in winning and losing situations, competing against higher and lower ranked competition. They want a full picture of the athlete before taking the critical step of making contact.
There are multiple ways to deliver your video content to the colleges of your choice. The most effective means, and the feature aspect of I Got Game Films, is to create a custom website (view a sample) for an athlete specifically geared to supply video feed of an athlete's career. Shoot or obtain video footage of your contests, edit it yourself or have someone edit the footage, then feature it on your site. College coaches can then freely visit your site and return as often as they like to watch your progress. Another alternative is to utilize sites such as YouTube to store your video and then link or embed your content for viewing. The least effective means of delivering your video content is to create a DVD of your contest. Although it is easy enough to mail those DVDs to coaches, it can be expensive to create enough to send to multiple colleges and as soon as the video has finished burning, the footage is old. A DVD cannot be re-edited and new footage cannot be added. If you cannot develop your own website, as we do here at I Got Game Films, then be prepared to continue creating DVDs of your footage until your final season has ended. College coaches have a voracious apetite for video content. Don't be surprised if you spend hours and hours creating a DVD only to have a college coach ask you for more footage to evaluate you on.
